What Is A Music Producer
A Quick history of a music producer
A very common question I get asked all the time is what exactly does a music producer do…What is a music producer. Before I get into what a modern-day producer does let’s go back. Traditionally the role of a music producer was to look over the entire recording production. What is production you ask? Well that is everything from pre production which is picking the music to record, budgeting the recording, finding and hiring the right musicians, dealing with the record companies request and booking the studio. During the recording process the producer was in charge of making sure the music was exactly what the label wanted and even picking the recording gear to use. In the early days the producer called the shots and the musicians were there just to play the parts.
However, over the years things started to change. Studio’s and gear got smaller and the lines of what is a music producer started to change.
The Role Of The Producer Today
Today the roll of what is a music producer is very different. Because we can literally record anywhere at anytime with very little gear (laptop and interface), the producer is not only the person that overlooks the entire project, the producer is the engineer and the artist as well. Traditionally the producer was needed because recording was such a process. Having someone to overlook the recording was the checks and balance of the entire process. Like a director making a movie. But things are way more streamline now. I can make a beat at my dining room table and release it that night under my own publishing.
So what does all this mean for a modern-day producer. Well I believe the roll is still just as important as it was back in the day but in a different way. The modern-day producer is an extension of the artist and not the overlord of the production. When I work with an artist I try to keep out-of-the-way of their artistic vision as much as possible. Instead my goal is to get them from point a to b as efficiently as possible. I know my gear and software so when they need something soniclly to partner with their artistic vision, I’m quick and ready to go.
A friend of mine that runs a YouTube channel called Pherotone Studios. His channels, like mine, is all about diy recording. His new series is all about recording a single in a shed and it’s really cool to see.
