Warm Audio WA 47jr Microphone Review
I first heard of Warm Audio a few years back when I was decided to build my own 1176. At the time Warm Audio just released the WA76, it looked really cool but I was really skeptical about how it sounded. $600? it can’t be that good right? I ended up building a Hairball Rev A, which I love but I can’t help but think should I have given the WA76 a chance? Well yes I really should have. Warm Audio has done some serious work in trying to recreate the classic sounds of some pretty awesome gear at a price point that is awesome. Since then I have messed around with a bunch of Warm Audio gear including the WA76 and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.

Warm Audio WA 47jr
So lets talk about the Warm Audio WA 47jr. A few weeks back I did a recording session at a studio that just picked up the Warm Audio WA47jr. We ended up really putting this microphone through its paces to really see if all the hype was true. Since the release of the 47 and 47jr, forms all over the web have been discussing these mics. How does these mics stack up to the original? To be honest that wasn’t the main question I had on my mind. I wanted to know if this microphone is able to be a workhorse microphone. And is there any familiar characteristics of the popular UA 47 fet at its price point.
The first thing I wanted to do is put it on the kick….because that’s what you would do with a U47 FET right? So we did……and it worked….really really well. At the end of the session we ended up using it for the acoustic guitars, percussion overheads and vocals. We actually used it more than some of the other microphones in the studio’s collection which included a Sennheiser Mk8 and couple of Neumann microphones such as TLM 103 and 102.
So would I buy this microphone? Absolutely. This microphone may be cheap but it has a lot of character found in the original FET. Is it exactly the same? no but it’s a 10th of the price of the Neumann issue and gets me close enough to what I’m going for.
